Being that I can't afford to pay them, I realize I at least HAVE TO feed these people. Should I just order like a gang of hero's or pizzas with some plastic cups and sodas? Or should I take individual orders? And what kind of snacks, if any, should I keep around in case they want a quick bite in between takes?
In a rogue filmmaking book I read awhile back, he recommended pasta. But overcooked pasta.
With it being overcooked, more water is absorbed and the pasta is thicker, therefore you have more food. Also, with this crappy (though plentiful) pasta you've served to your cast/crew they will all be bonded through the power of complaining.
Haha, that's my input for now. 😉

I wouldnt reccomend bad cooking. Whilst pasta is easy and a good energy source deliberately overcooking it will not get the best out of your crew. Treat them well and they will work well.

But should I just choose the food like Chinese, or pizza, or should I find out what each person would like, then just have somebody go get it?
Day One: Pizza. Several different kinds.
Day Two: Chinese food. Several different kinds
Day Three: Sandwiches. Several different kinds
Day Four: Pasta and salad. Several different kinds
Day Five: Chicken. Several different kinds
I once worked on a show (a one day shoot) where the producer
went to Burger King and got 15 dollar burgers. Nothing else, just
the burgers. For 12 cast and crew. The other two were for him.
Put yourself in the position of the crew. If you were working for
free on a movie what would YOU want to eat? That's what you serve
them.

The aim of an argument or discussion should not be victory, but progress.
Joseph Joubert, essayist (1754-1824)
Order them from a restaurant, preferably a reputable franchise or a local one known to be reliable. If you make the food yourself, and the others get food poisoning, you could face a lawsuit. Furthermore, don't serve alcohol under any circumstances, because if someone drinks and drives and gets into an accident, you'll also be liable.
Hate to be a wet blanket, but these are issues to consider - very seriously.
Ask local restaurants if they might donate some food in exchange for credit. I got a bunch off free beer when all I wanted was permission to show their label. You never know until you ask and companies often have budgets for this kind of thing.

rjschwarz's right, until you ask you dont know. So ask your cast and crew what they would prefer as like Robmanu7 said "Treat them well & they will work well" so bare in mind that if their doing you a favour by working for free, then they will be more likely to work with you agin in the future if you treat them well. Then you can always try and haggle with catering companies. But bare in mind that some times people have specific diets & allergies that might impede the food that you buy, which is why its important to ask them rather than just make assumptions.
