howdy, I've been editing DV for years now and went to film school for a while, I live in a town now where I don't know anybody who cares about movies. How does one meet people interested in making low-budget/no budget movies? I'd love to help out a director somewhere but have no idea where to start looking, any ideas?
Since you live where no one cares about movies my suggestion isn't going to be one you like - but one I bet you have thought of:
You need to move. You want to meet surfers, you gotta live where there are surfers. You don't need to be in Hollywood or New York because there are filmmakers all over.
Or look harder?
I am very anti film school - but the argument I hear most is that it's a great place to make contacts. You must have met people interested in making movies in film school - you could try there.
Is there a college or university nearby? Do they have a film appreciation program?
Is there a film festival within 30-50 miles from where you live? Sometimes going to a festival is a great place to meet other filmmakers.
You might also try posting on various messageboards (like you did here) and telling people your location.

Yes, the best thing about film school was meeting so many interesting people who had the same desire for filmmaking I have. The problem isn't the town completely, we have our own little film festival and there seems to be some artistic activity going on, we have a few colleges with decent art departments. There are dozens of movies in the Local section of our best video store (The Movie Fan, in downtown Normal, IL). The major part of the problem is just not having any friends who are interested in film and not knowing where to look to find people who are. The old adage "it's not what you know, it's who you know" is rarely more true than it is when applied to film and showbusiness. I know a bit of the "what", it's the "who" where I am f*cked. BTW, I'm living in Bloomington-Normal, Illinios if anyone knows anything about that area specifically. Thanks.

If there is a small festival then that's where you look.
You could start a production group - put up a flyer in "The Movie Fan" . People with similar interests can gather and become friends. Put up a flyer at the Normal Theater on North Street.
Indiana University has a free screening of classic movies every friday night - you might meet people interested in making movies there.
In fact there are several resources at IU in Bloomington. Where there are film fans, there are often film MAKING fans. They have a theater/drama department - where there are actors, there are people interested in movies. Try there.
There's the Bloomington Playwrites Project. Where there are writers and actors there are people interested in movies.
Contact the Indiana Film Commission - they will have hundreds of contacts. People actually working in the business - some might even be near you. Jim Krouse is an editor listed through them. He's in Bloomington. You could contact him.
So you aren't really a "f*cked" as you think you are. People aren't; going to come to you - you are going to have to get out there and go to them.
