My advice is to think up a 10 minute story (or two) that has special effects similar to what you plan to use in your scifi movie and minimal actors (one or two). Improvise if you want, write a script if you feel better about that. The idea is to test things out and see how they go. This will give you practical experience before your filming with a bunch of actors and sets. I would suggest a green screen virtual set or an outdoor scene.

This is a modified version of what the EVIL DEAD team did when they created their short movie INTO THE WOODS. Depending upon how well it comes out you can store them away where nobody ever will see them, or use them in attempts to get money for your real picture.

If you are really clever you can make them small scenes from your eventual movie so they can either be reused or so that the refilming will be very easy because you'll know what to do.

Write a tratment (a 4-5 page story about your movie)
Then write a script.

'Within the Woods'. What a weird coincidence, I'm watching that right now in another window :). It's a shame they couldn't sort out the rights to put it on the 'Evil Dead' DVD so we could actually have a decent version :).
