I'm looking to buy a camcorder priced between ?1000-?2000. Here are the models that i have found to be in that rage.

HDR-FX1 & FX7
HVR A1E
DCR VX2100
XM2

I'd love comments about these camcorders. Also, i can't figure out which ones (if any) can shoot 16:9. Some say they have a 16:9 colour view finder, but that's it.

Finally, would it be worthwhile spending my money on a second hand camcorder, like an XL2, that i could possibly get for ?2000ish.

I need it for shooting short films and documentaries that will be entered into competitions and film festivals. I'm a film student, and would like to be able to shoot at times when i won't be able to use the college equipment.

Or better yet, is it really worthwhile buying a camcorder over renting out higher spec more professional equipment for productions and using colllege equipment.

I'm a student, but focused on screenwriting and directing - are there any particular benefits in having my own camcorder? Or should i save the money for rented gear?

The HD cameras are all 16:9, as is the XL2. The others, I believe, have a 16:9 mode, but they fake it by just cropping off the top and bottom of the picture.

If you're shooting a lot, then at that price range you'll be much better off buying a camera than continually renting. If you shoot the odd weekend here and there, you'll be better off renting.

On the other hand, if you were looking at 100,000 pound HD cameras, then renting would usually be the best choice (since film cameras last much longer than video, the choice is more complex even at that price level).
