Please guys can someone help???
I'm doing a 30min oral on editing theory at uni, and can't quite find the info I'm after. Can someone please give me either detials on where I can some resourse (e.g. books or web site addresses) or even breifly explail the basics.
I know it's basicly the way in which the film is cut i.e. the way the movie flows. I've chosen to use Pulp fiction and road trip as my contrasting examples of scene linking/flowing.
Any information would be greatly appriciated,

If you talking about the techniques used in editing. You would want to talk about the way its cut, for instance how more action paked scenes are cut alot quicker etc. Also talk about how the soundtrack tyes in with the editing techniques used.

Hi,
if you want to get really anal about this, you could talk about the distinction between formalist and realist approaches to filmmaking. Not that I understand it myself but it is exemplified in the following question: do you go for a long take or do you edit? The answer, of course, is "it depends" - you choose the approach that best tells the story. However, theorists in the early days of filmmaking would argue the merits of one approach over the other. Therefore if you want access to the literature of a "theory of editing" then check out the writings of the formalists (e.g. Eisenstein and his stuff on montage). A good overview is provided in an old tome by Dudley Andrew "The Major Film Theories", OUP, 1976.
