well this christmas i want to make a family video for my parents. I want to take all the old tapes- the VHS and what not and edit them to create a good movie with music, and ultimatley making my mother cry. my question is how? how can i convert these old VHS to editable footage? if this is even possible...where would i go to make this happend?....any advice or information would be appreciated

JUst a little googling can find an answer in 15 seconds. What you are looking for is an audio/video capturing device. There are tons of solutions out there; from USB, FireWire, PCI cards, to ordinary SD camcorders that have the A/V input built-in.

I will assume, since you are on a filmmaking forum, that you have a camcorder. If it is MiniDV, does it have A/V inputs? If yes, you may not even need anything else. If not, the link above points to dozens of devices that do this. Whether it's a camcorder or any of these devices, you hook up your VHS VCR to it and capture the material that you need into your computer. You'll probably need to do a bit more research in order to find the most optimal device for your needs (and that won't break the bank for you). Otherwise, it is a very simple solution.
