I have made two films using my Hi-8 camcorder and was wondering if there are any forms of editing my film without using a pc?

Maybe because he is using film, not digital.

So is it a BAD idea to do VCR/TV? Or is it ok for home movies?

For home movies - sure it's fine. If you really have no desire to get your movie out to the public or if you only plan on doing this as a hobby.

But if you want to step up and start making movies for people to see, you'll have to start editing on a computer. With editing software you can make tight cuts, add transitions, add music, fix your sounds, screw with the picture, save to be posted on the web, etc... With a vcr, you can only arrange your footage, and usually the timing is way off. I've tried this before and had a lot of static.

You'll need a digital8 camera to get your hi8 footage into your computer. Firewire is the way to go these days, and a digital8 camcorder will allow you to take the stuff you already have and capture it in your computer with the proper hardware and software.

I have a question about video editing too. I know robert rodriguez edited El Mariachi on video after his film was transfered to video, and i was wondering how this can be done. are there vhs or hi8 editors? i dont see how he could have done such a great editing job with just two normal vcrs.

just because film is transfered to video does'nt mean it was transfered to vhs and edited on vcr's. even if he was editing tape to tape, he was using linear tape editing equipment not "two normal vcr's".

F this s

whats got into him?

..he cant take critisism

well great there goes the band

Yeah, and editing linear is a pain in the ass! It's also expensive compared to NLE's.

Check out Tha Casablanca Avio, or Kron or Prestige or DV. All these systems are very good especially if you are new to ''editing''. Just type in Hama or Casablanca Avio on the ''Net''

I can't remember offhand exactly but I think he mentions in his book Rebel Without A Crew that the initial edit was done on U-Matic tape using borrowed facilities. He definitely did use two standard VCRs for his earlier films, which is a monster pain in the arse but possible using record and pause.

Bare in mind what you see on the screen for El Mariachi is more like a $200,000 film. With Studio money he was able to recut it properly on film (he shot it on 16mm) and sort out the sound mix. What you see on screen is not a $7K movie.
