I am a new filmmaker, and I don't know much about sound, but I was wondering, since my camcorder doesn't have an external mic input, if I could connect a mic into my laptop and record the sound with that. Would it be possible to connect this ( http://amazon.com/dp/B0002KR7EU/ref=s9_asin_title_3-1966_p/104-6499512-2493563?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=1HA1P7Y0ANGHA18W51HN&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=278240701&pf_rd_i=507846)
to a laptop using this ( http://www.amazon.com/ARISTA-16-098-6-3mm-Headphone-Adapter/dp/B00009V6QB/ref=sr_1_2/104-6499512-2493563?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1188406179&sr=8-2)? Sorry if I seem like such an idiot. Thanks.

Like anything, you get what you pay for. That lavalier system is
the bottom of the barrel. the price is affordable, but it's a mic
made for lectures, not movie production.

That may not be what you're asking - in fact it doesn't seem to
answer your question at all. Yes, you CAN hook that mic to your
laptop and record the audio. But it will not meet your filmmaking
needs.

One, low level lavalier will allow you to record one person in a
very quiet environment (like a lecture hall) but won't allow you
to record two or three actors in a room. Even adding more of
those mics won't do the job. The pick pattern of those tiny mics
isn't very good, the RF transmitters are prone to picking up
radio signals and you will need a mixer to adjust the volume for
each mic.

A lot of work to avoid getting a shotgun mic.

You could record your sound seperatly, but it makes editing your film a lot harder. I was in the sae situation that you are, I was just going to budget for a second camera that had an external mic link. Dont foget that sounds just as important as every thing ellse in film. Cleary.

Yeah, thanks for your responses. I really just think I'll try and get a camera with a mic input (I think the ZR800 has one?) because I don't think it'll be worth the trouble.
