so any advice on maybe some good cameras to start out with?
maybe some good camcorder packages..

A good camera to start out with is a sony VX-2100, I've been using for about a year and a half, in all kinds of weather, and its still going strong. Its not "real" (native) widescreen, and doesn't support 24 fps, but it has good video quality. Another camera that I've been around a bit is a Canon GL-1, and from the stuff I edited from it, the picture was really clear.
