Greetings, fellow filmmakers!

Okay, I'm just getting started.

I'm applying for a grant and need professional advice on what software, peripheral equipment, etc. are needed to create professional quality films using a Mac Pro.

I have Final Cut Studio (the whole suite), a Canon Vixia HV30 (HighDef) and am looking to funds from the grant for a new Mac Pro. I don't have sound equipment or a cinematic lens for the camera (also to be covered by grant funds).

Any recommendations on new, different or better software for post-production processing, sound equipment or camera peripherals? I'm shooting for as close to theater-quality as possible.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'd say you're good to go with that software and camera (maybe buy mics), but if you want the theater-quality then you should get some sound equipment and lights. I use Final Cut Pro and I'm really pleased with it, by far the best editing software I'd used for a while. For special effects I'd recommend Adobe After Effects, otherwise, stick to FCS.

Definitely get final cut studio 2, that provides you with every thing that you need to get started properly (It has even been used to edit programmes such as 'Every body hates Chris').

You'll also need to get yourself an external hard drive as you want to keep your mac running as smooth as possible, so free up the mac's internal memory as much as possible.

I would also advice you to get some lighting, easily one of the most neglected aspects in film production. So since your looking for near theater quality your definitely going to need to get your self some as this is predominantly one of the most important aspects of making your production look professional. There plenty of tutorials out there with regards to ligthing, Id advice you to watch some just to learn the basics if you arent already familiar with them.

Hope this helps, Cleary.
