Hello and welcome to my new game show "How did they shoot it?" a game in which every thread I will post a short movie or video clip it will be up to you to explain how they shot it (Using green screen, Dolly, Rail, Crane, Special editing)It's a great way to practice your knowledge of filmmaking.
And for this first time, here is the Paul Thomas Anderson video of "Across the universe"

How did they shoot it?
Because im clueless...im going to guess they had a gizmo that strapped her in and had a camera attached. The hole thing was free moving and had two guys move it in a circle...
Either that, or a wizard did it...thats always a good answer to it.
Yeah, and how'd they get right in front of the mirror?
That's just the part that screws me over. Is it just fake? Like, do they just add in a "mirror" in post with appropriate reflections and stuff? Because I remember, that's how they did it in that one scene in Contact..
"Video's a poor excuse, I know. But it helps me remember... and I need to remember... Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in. "

Well, My friend thinks it's a green screen at some times, Do you think it is possible?
i would say a fair amount of greenscreen was shot here. If you notcie while she is walking up on teh counter everybody behind her is moving in slowmotion. So they either did a green screen or they shot them destroying the restaurant then shot her walking on the counter seperatly then just cut her out of her shot and put her on the other shot and slowed down the shot of them behind her. Most of it seems to be done with either a jib or a very good steady cam guy. As for teh mirror thing...there are multiple ways they could have done it. The one i think the used was a green screen.
"Anyone who has ever been privileged to direct a film also knows that, although it can be like trying to write 'War and Peace' in a bumper car in an amusement park, when you finally get it right, there are not many joys in life that can equal the feeling." - Stanley Kubrick

Great Video. It's a combination of precision timing of the entire act, adding deleting the stuff in post, using specialised rigs, not to mention shooting the entire video at twice the camera speed while she lip sings to the audio track playing back at twice the original speed during the shoot.
The mirror reflection I would say is added in the post surely, though the technology used today would eliminate the use of a green screen for that kind of an effect. The mirror is always there but the reflections in the mirror in the beginning of the shot are added in in the post. But As the camera closes in on her, the actual mirror in the shot is cropped back in.
The device used in the 360 pivot reminds me of the one used in the film Requiem For a Dream where the camera is rigged on to the actor's body in front. The rig used here is of course more sophisticated than in the film. Otherwise the rest of the video is pretty simple, except the precision timing of the actors creating the havoc.
And Zift88 great going buddy, you've begun a revolution of sorts here I think. Great thought. cheers.
Yeah. I think I agree more with robi8886.

one shot that i hav eyet to figure out is in War of the Worlds. When tom cruise is drivinig in the van with his two kids down a highway there is one long shot that moves in and out of the van. It starts out in front of Tom then pulls out and goes behind the van like a video game then it spins around to the side of teh van and goes backinto the van into the back seat. The shot has to be 5 minutes long. I have no clue how Spielberg accomplished this. I am assuming some of teh best editing ever and maybe some green screen.
If you know what i am talking about then let me know how you thought it was done. If you havent seen this shot then rent teh movie just to watch this shot. It is truly amazing.
