I am a new to filmmaking, but quite interested in film specifically as opposed to digital formats. Personally, and I know that it is a personal choice, I think that film when done well is cinematographically superior to digital media. I'd like to ask the moderators what they think about 16mm and super 16mm as viable media for the future. Would you still recommend spending time and money on equipment for 16mm filmmaking, or will it be gone in several years?
Thanks!
16 and Super16 are still viable. Even Super8 is coming back strong with the availability of negative stocks. I own 4 16mm cameras and would absolutely recommend spending time and money learning and using 16mm. Start with a cheap Bolex and work your way up.
These are the films shot in Super 16mm and released theatrically in 2006:
Sketches of Frank Gehry
Neil Young Heart of Gold
Brothers of the Head
Flannel Pajamas
Half Nelson
Harsh Times
The History Boys
The Last King of Scotland
L'enfant (The Child)
Look both Ways
Venus
A Year Without Love
Alpha Male
I'm still doing the research on the films released direct to video that were shot on 16 or Super16 - but there are a lot. No 16mm won't be gone soon.
