I have been browsing this site for a while now and a first time poster.
I have came from a Video and Television Production background and unfortunately I had to leave the industry cause I had bills to pay and live in a bad area for this industry. My friend and I decided to start our own project.
My friend and I are planning a short documentary and we are currently working on a treatment. Our goal is film festivals, but it might make a TV pilot. I have already determined the equipment we are going to use, and we are still working on the budget for the rest of the crew that we will need.
The biggest question that I have is how should I go about getting the funding we need for the production? We already have a couple of ideas, but we believe that it may not bring in enough money for the project.
Your first step is to put together a full, line item budget.
There is no money to be made for a doc made for film festivals
so you will not be looking for investors. You need to approach
people who believe in you personally and ask them to fund your
project. Of course you can always try those crowd funding websites.
They rarely work, but you gotta try, right?
When will you have a full, complete, line item budget finished?

Hopefully we will have the budget finished by friday. We don't plan on making money with this project, we want to do it cause it is something that we believe in.
Right now our two biggest expenses is travel and camera rentals, grip, and other equipment that we will need on location.
Oh and we do plan on having a project website, a facebook, blog, etc. We will be asking for donations through our site, and since I was ask to produce a webcast for one of the radio stations in our market, I will get a chance to promote the project on the show.
Excellent!
Sounds like you've got it all covered. Good luck. I'd love to see it
when it's done.
