Okay, so I've written a treatment that I think is pretty good. I registered it the WGA and I think it can generate interest because it's low budget, has a unique concept, and it's a marketable genre... whether I'm delusional or not remains to be seen, but let's just assume I'm not.

My goal here is to direct this film. There's no point in trying to pitch it to Hollywood when it can be done independently and that would give me an infinitely better chance of directing.

In the very near future I'll be talking to a couple of connections I have who would be able to help me get this going, but supposing that doesn't work out... how do you get in touch with people looking to finance low budget features? And what's the best way to represent myself so that I'd be attached as the director?

I'm working on the final screenplay, but I happen to think the treatment can generate interest. Actually I'd love to get some honest, impartial feedback on it... if anyone would be willing please email me via my profile...

I'll read the treatment.

When you are sitting in the producers office - the producer who
loves the script and is willing to finance it - make sure your
directors reel is excellent. Prove to the producer that none of the
directors she's worked with in the past, who she loves and has
made promises to, are as good for the movie as you are.

That's part of the plan... I've been gathering some rudimentary film making equipment and planning to do shorts for a while, and hope to get really going on that in the next month or so. In the meantime, I'd hold out for a producer willing to take a flyer on an inexperienced director. The bottom line is I've got no aspirations for becoming a professional screenwriter, so I don't need to sell to anyone who wouldn't give me a chance as a director.

In that case you have a very clear path.

If you think the treatment is enough to generate interest and you
are primarily interested in an independent producer, then start
sending it out right away. Make sure you mention that you will
not sell the script and are only interested in a meeting if the
producer will hire you as the director.

It's a numbers game at this point. Get the treatment out there
right away.
