Foreigners in the movie industry

Hi guys,

I am not a US citizen (I'm from Israel), 26 y-old (F), and am planning to arrive at L.A sometime in the next 4 months. I don't know anybody in the west coast, let alone in the movies...
I am quite an autodidact kind of a person, and I have a great drive for making films, both might compensate for my little to none practical experience in actually shooting anything...
I do however write a lot, and have some professional experience with it, having writen to student magazines in my home country (and my native language...), I do have a B.A and an M.A in Linguistics and behavioral sciences as well.
I might attend some film classes at the Los Angeles city college during my stay.

My question is about job opportunities for a foreigner in the film industry, even in entry level jobs. Are there any?
I mean, for someone like me- highly motivated and consider myself skilled and in a primary-sort-of-way talented, yet with neither any connections in the movie business nor a working visa, can there be someone willing to give me a chance?
Have you heard about such cases,or know such people?

I am hardly naive, and I do not expect things to be easy of course, but since I know nothing of what actually goes on in the backdoors of this industry I have to know that it's realisticly possible even.

I'd appreciate any advise you might have on this.

Lee.

I suspect you'll have trouble without a visa. As I understand it, it's easy for Hollywood to hire you if they decide you're going to be the next big star, but it's likely to be far more difficult to work legally in a PA job without a visa.

That said, I do know someone from the UK who worked as a PA on a feature in New York a while back, but I believe that was officially an unpaid internship so the rules may well be different then. I also know a few British actors who just flew out to live in LA for a few months looking for acting work, but none ever found any so I don't know what would have happened if someone wanted to hire them... again, if it was a major part in one movie I suspect the producers could get a visa for them.

I hate to tell you humanature but its hard for locals to get work in the movie industry sometimes. A lot is based on timing and persistance.

I would suggest you find a hollywood movie that was made or filmed in Israel recently and try to track down the production company involved (who would either be foreign friendly or hostile depending how production went). If they are in production in Israel all the better. Then ask them the same question. They may have no jobs but could send you in the right direction. They may have a job and like the gumption you took in tracking them down.

Here is a news article that has some places to start.

You might also try contacting the Israeli film industry (if that's a real organization and not just a term to group Israeli filmmakers together) and ask them the question as well. Odds are you are not the first trying to make the leap as Hollywood promises bigger budgets and greater spectacle than nearly any other movie making capital.
