I'm in the developmental stages of a project I wish to get rolling in about a year or so and I was just wondering where you would go about gathering a cast and crew to help?
I don't have many friends that would be interested in being filmed, at least not enough to fill the cast, so where would I go to find like minded people that need some screen time or need practice acting and would be willing to work for free?

First, I suggest you don't look for cast and crew until you have
firm shooting dates.
For cast I would say the theater department at any school is a
great place to start. Many cities have acting schools - another
place to look.
For crew the theater department in any school is also a great
place to start. Many cities have a film commission - another place
to look.
During the next year or so, you could look into your local
filmmaking community - again schools are a great place to start -
and be the like minded person other directors are looking for.
Work for free on several movies over the next year or so - you'll
meet other like minded people that way.

Good deal. That was more or less my plan. I wasn't going to start looking for anyone to help with the project for quite some time. I was just looking for ideas so when that time comes then I know what to do and where to go.
Is there any good websites or classifieds or anything where they post casting calls? (I see this forum has one)
Thanks for your advice!

Depending on where you live, Craig's List can be a good place to post calls. Notices for talent and crew appear there daily, and many creative people with little experience sift through them in hope of building experience/portfolio. freecastingcall.com is also a good place.
sweet, thank you vasic. I'll check those places out and see whats out there.

CI and Vasic, I just noticed this thread. Your advice is very helpful. 🙂
Yeah it's helpful.
I just hopped on craigslist and found an indie movie in pre-production looking for some crew members. I shot them an email to see if I can do any production assistant work and waiting to hear back. It'd be awesome to see how its done before I do anything 🙂

My personal advice is to use social networking sites in order to appeal for people. In my case I have worked with a lot of young Mc's (Rappers), so naturally I have the opetunity to use some of them in my productions. So I would also recommend searching myspace in your local area to see what rappers, singers, models & other creative people are about.
Hope this idea helps, Cleary.
