Hi, am also a new filmmaker still at school and about to finish.
Main problem with previous films that I have made has been quality of picture and sound-I'm find for editing. Can anyone recommend me a decent miniDV camcorder and especially a decent mike in the $1200 area? I've heard that a Canon Optura is good for example, but it seems a little outdated. My main problem is in the dark, as my old camera has really poor light quality in general as well as having really bad sound. I'm talking fictional films with reasonable distance sound-like 5 or 6 metres all round with being able to hear normal dialogue at that distance.
Can anyone help me?

you can get a solid shotgun mic for way under $1,200. The Seinhiesser ME66 with module K6 goes for about $350. You can make a boom pole or spend you money on one. They are $100 to buy but you can make them for $15. The Canon Optura looks fine. If possible try to find one with a manual zoom. But i would spend some money on lighting too. Lighting can increase the look of your film ten fold. Plus its easy to do it cheaply. Go find some construction lights or even just some flood lights. Search teh web for LIghting movies and you will get all types of info. Remeber you can always make things darker in post and it will still look solid. But making it brighter in post will make it look crappy. So over light rather then under light. Good Luck
