i have a gripe. i hate the way films are going down the drain. there hasnt been an original film out there in 11 years! (pulp fiction was the last great film in my opinion) it kills me. i ate drank and slept film all my life. then i promised someone i would give film up, because i was obsessed with it. now i dont have anything to do except play computer games etc. i spent 4k on film equipment to make movies a couple years ago. now all i do is write poetry! help me back in the right direction. filmmaking was my life. how do i get it back??

thanks

I hate to tell you, but 'Pulp Fiction' was hardly original... most of the movie was a 'homage' to movies by more creative directors.

Mark is correct. Pulp Fiction was far from original. Even telling the stories from various points of view and out of order had been done often. OT ripped off many sources. His way of stealing was very interesting and well done - but hardly original.

Let?s try a couple on for size. Did you find none of these films original?
Pi
Being John Malkovich
Primer
Shawshank Redemption
Serial Mom
Seven
Shallow Grave
12 Monkeys
Fargo
Swingers
Sling Blade
Waiting for Guffman
Traveler
Nil by Mouth
Boogie Nights
American History X
Life is Beautiful
Session 9
The Iron Giant

Leave your computer games for one hour a day and write an original screenplay. Then leave your games for 10 days in a row and make that screenplay into a movie.

I bet that once you are engrossed in filmmaking once again, the pull of computer games will be less attractive. But you need to

step

away

from

the

screen.

i will hopefully keep working on films, and ill try what was suggested. right now most of what i do is stop-motion, since all my friends are in school or at their dayjobs. its fun, but i prefer live action. i guess i could try some workshops or something. i dont know...

Well, 'Repo Man' is by far the most obvious. I'm sure there's a web site somewhere listing all of them.

I've been thinking of doing a Lego horror movie ever since I discovered that they apparently sell a Lego chainsaw dude now :).

Oddly, for such a long list, 'Repo Man' isn't on it :).

While I wouldn't agree with that, I will say that there were a lot of unoriginal films in 2004. Lots of remakes and sequels and such.
