Yes, very. DV (i.e. MiniDV and DVCAM) has a low resolution compared to 16mm/35mm film and, if shot on DV rather than transferred from film, a low contrast range.

That doesn't mean that you can't make it look good on a TV screen, but I've yet to see a DV movie projected in a cinema that didn't scream 'video' at me.

However, Sony and JVC are supposed to be releasing HDV cameras soon to record hi-definition video on DV tapes. HDV at 1920x1080 will be a lot closer to film if they put a decent lens and CCDs on the front.

No, I've just worked on a lot of low-budget movies from Hi8 up to 35mm film. Never done IMAX yet :).

Well, yes. There is a Difference in look from Video to Film... Unless you choose a higher end Video camera (I.E Sony HDW-F900) for around $150,000.00.... Using a DV or SD camcorder will just not cut it when projected to a Big screen. there have been some features out now, like "28 days later" shot in SD DV... but if you watch the movie, you see the obviouse problem, even on the trailers. Now, Films such as Once upon a time in mexico and Two brothers, shot with the HDw-F900... not a BIG difference. This is becasue the avergae $12,000 & under Camera records at 200,000 Pixels, $50,000.00 & under shoot at around 500,000 Pixels... were as HD Cameras shoot at around 2.2 Million Pixels... when transfered to film, this makes a LOT better image.

P.S)
Even though there are consumer HD cameras... those will still not cut it... the HDW-F900 alows for lense interchange and a LOT of In camera film feature not givin in Consumer HD Cameras... Also Consumer Hd cameras record only at around 1 million pixels... still not good enough to compare to film.... Dont be fooled by the words "HD"... it dont mean much unless the camera is above $100,000.00!
