i've been trying to go to film school in australia for the past 3 years or so, but have found there's not one ounce of funding from the US dept of education because the schools in question don't have financial aid offices or aren't finanicial aid approved. has anyone-short of saving a ton of $$$-found a way to circumvent that hurdle? or anyplace overseas actually? are there any former film students out there who've done this??8?

Hi!

I also want to study in Aus - I'm a Canadian, but was curious if you did manage to find funding options aside from loans. Also what school are you considering?

no. i haven't. gave up the ghost and applied to LA Film Institute. There were several schools i looked, most in sydney. one in brisbane and one in melbourne..i've been there before and love the country and know the aussies really take the work of making a film seriously. have you seen lantana? or rabbit proof fence? or flirting..? as a canadian, don't you have some kind of treaty in league with the commonwealth of england that allows you to go over there for school? if i were you, i'd look into grants and scholarships..whatever is available up there..have you tried all of that?

Sadly, studying at film schools in foreign countries tends to be an expensive endeavour.

For non-US intitutions, full fee-paying foreign students are one of the main sources of revenue, so most schools aren't encouraged to offer cheap places or scholarships. There are a few international study scholarships, however they are generally geared towards courses and institutions which have "high academic merit". Unfortunately, this tends not to include institutions offering film courses, or at least, the film departments within institutions which do offer film.

Paying for it yourself (either directly or via a loan) is probably one of the few options available. The Commonwealth route might be an option worth exploring if you live in a Commonwealth country.

You should also contact the school directly, and ask if they have any financial aid available for foreign students. Your changes of success will be greater with larger institutions (i.e. universities) than it will be with privately-run colleges.

okay, i am from australia (sydney) and i am very surprised that international students (presumably from the states) want to attend a film school in Australia!. let me tell you something... Australia sux when it comes to the film industry. Search up any aussie film in yahoo movies and you wont find it! (Ned Kelly doesn't count as an aussie film). Well, i will recomend some schools and you should find assistance schemes to help you financially:
SAE byron bay (more for film making and all the technical stuff)
SIFS (sydney international film school- costs over $20,000 per year (au))

see these websites...

http://www.aftrs.edu.au/
www.vca.unimelb.edu.au
www.edna.edu.au

P.S. you might like to study in either sydney or victoria
sydney because its the most popular city in australia and your bound to find a great education
and victoria because thats where all aussie films and shows are filmed at so you could get some good experience filming there.
Don't think australias all bush land, kids go to schools in kangaroo pouches, have pet koalas, eat vegimite and meat pies cause its defietly not like that. The only place you'll see a koal or kangaroo is at a zoo (i recomend to see taronga zoo or the one at dubbo). personally i love vegimite and british comedy shows should stop making fun of it.

cya people and good luck with it all.

Wow.. I used to think going to Australia Film Institute is the best way.. But then I heard from here, it's sucks huh?

Well then..
I don't go to film school or anything
But I always help about making movie,,
Which means I'm just a crew production house
That I learn much from see their move

Then I realize that I can do my own film
I don't have to go to school..
I just need to read some books
See Production House working their big movie screen
Then learn about editing from internet
But now.. I use low budget for all my movie
