Don't be sad... he's right in his own offhand way. This is a blue collar job we're talking about here, and the best film school is work. Just be sure it's what you want to do, because the hours are long, the politics are brutal, your family life will suffer and you can make as much or more money simply by being a plumber. I can't help you with schools in the UK. I'm sure someone out there will be able to... but if you take Mandor's advice, you'll be 4-7 years ahead of a guy who went to film school the same day you walked through the gates at Pinewood. 4-7 years is the difference between boss and minion in this industry.

More or less, yes. It's only your first job, so take anything that'll get you in there. Don't be afraid to find some student projects and work for free on them. I worked for a director of purchasing at a viz effects studio. Very fringe. I drove around LA picking up stuff we bought to make movies... pencils, dry ice, styrofoam, dye, lathe parts, film. One day a position opened in the camera department, and they knew I wanted in. At the end of 4 years there, I was in the union, had contacts, and was working as a camera assistant. Everyone's got a different way. You've got to find yours. There is no secret. Just be ready when it's your turn.

Or... go to film school.
