Alright, I got my first camera! Now here's the the thing: I've seen footage shot on a CANON XL1, and for some reason it looks a lot better than when I shoot (the overall quality I mean, i don't mean anything like focusing).
Why is that? Is there some filtering program I need to use? Do I need to buy more expensive mini DVS? Is it the lighting?
How can optimize the "film look" just using my canon XL1 that I've seen in other pieces?

Thanks.

My guess would be good lighting and good color grading after it's edited. Lighting really makes the biggest difference: if you compare '28 Days Later' to the average student movie shot on an XL1, that's what having $8 million to spend on lighting the shots properly does for you :).
