Hello Everyone,

For a while now I have an interest in film making and the entire process behind it. from script writing to the actual publishing. unfortunately I have not yet been able to find a good description of each of the phases.
Also I'm looking for a good description of things like units, the organizational structure and location scouting.
Basically everything related to the process of film making.

I am hoping someone here can give me some links to internet sources or perhaps some book titles that describe everything.

Thanks in advance.

kind regards,

Richard

Richard,
The 3 phases of filmmaking are: Pre-production, Production and Post-Production, which the titles explain what each phase means. 1st unit means the camera crew, etc and the director shooting the main cast. The 2nd unit is usually a second crew that goes out to get shots of things other than the main cast....shots of landscapes, street scenes, crowd scenes, etc...pick-up shots that don't involve the cast. A great filmmaking book that is fairly new is "Just Shoot It!" which can be bought online (Amazon, Barnes & Noble)or ordered through most bookstores.

You have come to the right place, thats for sure.

I'd say the most important aspecsts are as follows:

A good narrative (story).
Good planning (Pre production).
Good actors (Beliveable performances).
Good lighting.
Good sound.
Brilliant marketing (If people dont know where they can watch it then how can you gain an audience? They cant).

In my own personal opinion though, if you havent got a good story then you might as well save your self a lot of time. To me planning is the most important stage of makinga film, if you have good planning then you will save your self a lot of time and no doubt money also.

Books: filmmaking for dummies. Its simple to understand and it takes you from A-Z of filmmaking, it helped me out alot which is why I am recommending it.

Aside from the How-To links provided, it is very important to note that you will need: MONEY and DEDICATION + PERSEVERANCE. In order to finish a movie, you will need to DO IT in spite of all the hardships you will encounter.

For movie editing, you can use any modern PC (within 1 year old) and for free editing software, you can go to www.avid.com for their FreeDV free software.
