You guys have helped me so much already. Once again i need your help. I'm making a short film that i'm determined to start filming in the summer, but i really need to find a way to fund it. As a teenager, it might even be harder but i was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to get money, fundraising, whatever i have to do to finish my project.

For shorts it's hard, because there's no real market for them so anyone who 'invests' in it is probably just giving you money for no return. Aside from government grants, you're probably better off figuring out ways to make the movie for less money than trying to convince people to give you money to make it.

There are far fewer filmmaking grants available in the States than the UK because filmmaking is government supported here - it's completely privately funded. There is no way you would be able to apply, beat the hundreds of thousands of others applying and get your check in 3 to 5 months - in time for this summer.

What do you mean by "trust"?

seems like there's always a catch to things involved with the government.

Where're you from? And have you budgeted your short film yet? If you can share the budget with us, I bet that you can get some help better.

As far as funding goes from the Government, in Canada I know they're very good about it, but they're only going to help you if you A)You have a lot of good references and get in on their jumpstart program for young filmmakers or B) have an established track record.

I might be 18, but watch out, everyone has to start somewhere. I'm just starting a bit faster and bigger. 🙂

I do have a track record and I'm in a program for teen filmmakers. I haven't budgeted my short film yet. The program I'm in has plenty of people to help me but i feel i need more. I'm not asking for a million dollars, but its harder to get money for a short film apparently. It might even be harder as a teenager. Advice for the 18 year old: You are very lucky to be living in LA so go for it! I live in New York so I'm walking by movie and TV sets everyday. Take Advantage of where you live. You might even have a better chance than me. I'm sure there are plenty of programs for teen out there.

yea.. only problem with living L.A.... there called Movie Studios next door. THEY make it hard to get funds, because they HAVE that proven track record that i dont. etc, etc. dude, just come to L.a. and i JUST realized, your two young. well when your old enough, come to L.A.

lol

I know nothing about financing films, but if all else fails i guess people should just figure out another way by yourself. I'm definetly coming to LA. But maybe you should google other programs in LA or look for summer programs. The ones in NY are alot easier to get into. All you need is passion.

well, i've spent the last three weekends going door to door in different neighborhoods and basically asking for donations. I literally go door to door like a salesman...I even have a short practiced script to say to people at the door. I found that by asking for only $1 people usually give more. So far I have collected just over $700...not bad for a couple of hours of work. You can try that.

I just moved to a 20 story building so that gives me alot of oppurtunity. I like the way you think. What do you say when you ask them? Your idea can also give you alot of exposure. I'm not willing to go on the train and ask, so i'm really going for your idea.

Prostitution works wonders, as does drug dealing! Sometimes you just have to give a little to get a little.

But if you are a MORAL individual, you would hit up old folks. Often you can pick up a lot of cash for the minimal amount of work. For instance, sort thier recycling, get $20 dollars. Or is some cases, if you just explain the situation to them, many will flip you some cash anyways.
Or there is always your family. Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, they all can help a bit.

And medical studies are a great way to get cash. Some have a very restricitve age limit though.

Or if you are extremly ambitious there is always a good bank or two that are just begging to be knocked off.

That's it! You people have stood in my way long enough! I'm going to clown college!

Though in retrospect may I give my wisdom, screw a budget, go guerilla. Its alot more fun, alot more creative, and can be done about 3/4 of the time with about 300 dollars or less.
