i'm having some trouble choosing a feild that i would like to work in after highschool. I am considering a career in movie making, but i think i would only be interested in making extreme sports movies. I understand that this would be a really hard feild to enter, and i really have no clue how i would go about that. I mean, the pros will only film with you if you're well known in the industry. i guess i'm wondering how i would acheive that.

Are you talking about movies with movies with extreme sports in them or are you talking about documentaries of extreme sports?

i wouldn't call them documentarys but ya, like with real athletes not actors no script or any of that just like a bmx movie or snowboard movie showcasing talent and appealing mostly to the participats of that sport and not to a larger audience. i hope that was clear.

Breaking into an industry like that is all about knowing people. If you want to get into filming bmxers then you would need to know bmxers with potential at becoming pro or ones that are already pro, because of there been such little demand. And been a filmer for a bmx movie doesnt even mean you will get paid, you will probably just get to travel with the team unless its a huge name because usually the filmers for those kind of movies are just the bmxers friends helping out. If you want to make a living of it you would also have to make the movie.

Assuming you have no real connections in the extreme sport in question you might try figuring out what (if any) production company films that sport right now. Then try to get a job with them. Offer to work for free if you have to. Learn what you can and make connections with the extreme athletes so that when you're ready to do your own thing they'll remember and trust you.

It's a long route but probably the best if you have no connections yet.

Nah you wont really need education in film, you can just learn how its all filmed from watching bmx movies. You will just need to know how to work the camera well.

New guy here.

I basically got in the field of action sports because I was involved in it. I'm a fan of moto-x, hillclimb racing, rockcrawling, rockracing, etc... even do some myself. I would watch current videos/dvd's and watch how they are done. I asked a camera guy I saw once about how to get in field, etc. Next thing I knew I was running camera at an event. 4 years later I produced my own film. Knowing someone in the sport is a huge help. If you know of a certain sport, get to know people, bring a camera and see what happens.
