I was just curious about which people would rather invest in. I am currently torn between buying an Avid system or buying a new camera. Right now I am editing on the latest Final Cut, but am about ready for an update, but I am shooting on a Hi8 sony handheld. I thought that I should invest in editing software before buying a better camera, but many of my friends tell me to get a better camera. Advice anyone?

That's it! You people have stood in my way long enough! I'm going to clown college!

if you have the latest version of final cut why bother buying another editing software? i would say buy a camera.

Well, not meaning to sound pertentious, but I have gotten to the point where its holding me up. I much to my own suprize have learned damn near everything there is to know about the system. The only problem with upgrading to Avid is I don't think they have a Mac compatiable system. I do see where you're coming from though, I am in love with Final Cut. I dunno.

I'd be interested in how Final Cut is holding you up. Now I know almost nothing about Avid so I don't know what that program can do that FCP can't. I'm almost afraid to ask - what if I start to think FCP is holding me up? ?;)?

Avid Xpress Pro 4.6 works on both Mac and PC and it rocks! I use it, Premiere Pro 2 and After effects 6.5 pro and all in all, the only other program I have to use is Cool Edit pro sometimes for direct sound manipulation.
My advice....FCP is awesome. Get a new camera!

Just out of curiosity how much is Avid Xpress Pro 4.6. For future reference. And I'm buying a camera, thanks folks.

Don't think you can buy 4.6 anymore. I think Xpress Pro HD is about $1500, or about $500 if you can get the educational discount.

There's also Avid Free DV, which costs $0, but will be quite limited compared to Final Cut.

I'm actually getting frustrated with the format and features. Its beginning to become a royal pain in the arse. Everything from the log and capture, which no matter how I do it always gets thrown off by at least 3 seconds, to the editing tools and filters. When I first started witht he program and was still getting acquainted with it, I thought it was fabulous, and still do to a certain extent. At that point in time, I was not using the log and capture feature, simply logging all of my footage and then spliting it into seperate clips from there. That worked fine but took an age to do. That is when I discovered its log and capture downfall; all clips are thrown off by three seconds. Also, the unlimted RT is a joke and a half. I have a fully tricked out Powerbook with 2gb of RAM and a kicking tuned up harddrive and the Unlimited RT feature still does not work. And its just frustrating to have to sit through rendering. And the filters are just bizzare, none of them doing what you want or expect it to do. I dunno, I still like the program, but whats taking me say 2 days to do on my friend's Avid system is taking me a 4 days to do on mine. I'm actually beginning to think my computer doesn't like me anymore, the speech feature won't even tell me jokes.?:(?

I prefer software first
Cuz in here, we're using alot of mixing in software
Which means if your camera standard,
You could just edit color effect
