im new to filmmaking. i want to make a documentary. i bought a super 8 camera and am going to buy a hi8 video camera to make it. i would most likely transfer the super 8 footage to hi8 with a projector and just taping it with the hi8. i was wondering, is there any other way to edit the movie besides on the computer? i know thats the best way but i really dont think my computer is good enough to do it.

You'll most likely run into vertical sync problems if you try and simply film the projected Super 8 with your video camera. This will result in black bars appearing in your video where the refresh rate of your camera is out of sync with the frame rate of your film.

The best way to get this footage into a digital format is to take your Super 8 to a company that specialises in film to tape transfers. That way you won't have any vsync probs.

If you want to edit in the traditional way, you'll need to get yourself a Super 8 film cutter and splicer. Obviously you can only do this with the film. Trying to cut and splice Hi8 video would be a bad idea ?:)? If you want to edit the video traditionally, you'll have to get your hands on some Hi8 decks and an analogue video editing controller. Needless to say, it would be easier to do it digitally.

The costs aren't as expensive as you'd think because there were loads of people with home movies on Super 8 who wanted them converted to video. Try to find a company that does this for wedding videos etc, rather than a professional company.

The vsync problems come into play because of the different refresh rates of video and film. The easiest way to see what I mean is to look at your computer monitor through your video camera. You'll see the computer screen flickering because the refresh rate of your monitor is different to the rate of your video.

For more information, see the Internet Filmmaker's FAQ question about filmming computer screens (it's in the Cinematography section from memory).
