Hey everyone! I'm new here and thought this would be a great place to ask some questions. I'm investing in a new cam, and I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on whether the DVX100b, or the HVX200 is a better buy? I'm going to be shooting promos, commercial spots and maybe some music videos. I noticed that the HVX has an add on called Redrock Micro that puts forward a pretty nice film quality....what do you guys think?

I have the original versions of both cameras. I'm guessing you know that the HVX200 can shoot HD, while the DVX is standard definition. If that makes no difference to you, the DVX is probably going to give you better performance in low light settings. The HVX has quite a bit of grain in underexposed shots, especially if you push the gain. However, the newer model, the HVX200a addresses this to some degree. I would recommend that version of the camera, especially if you want to use the Redrock adapter, which requires even more light.

They are both great cameras, in my opinion. The Cinegamma feature is very nice. I shot a feature, THE AWAKENING on the DVX100 and another feature, EXILE, with the HVX200. If you really wanted to study them, both movies are at my website or you can look at framegrabs, below. I can assure you the newer model cameras will give you even better pics.

I like that the HVX can give you both worlds - DV tape recording AND high def P2 recording. Some HVX framegrabs:

Those DVX shots look great. Can you tell me - were they shot using Squeeze mode or are they letterboxed?

No letterboxing. Just to make sure we are talking about the right pics - the first 6 pictures are from the HVX200 in native widescreen (SQUEEZE mode).

Shots 7 - 12 are from the DVX100 and they were shot in full frame (Conversion mode - NORMAL).

Thanks so much for that reply and posting some examples! I really appreciate it, and I agree with gugon, the shots look great :). I'm probably gonna go for the HVX, because like you said I'm interested in the dual recording methods. Thanks again! 🙂

Emulsion, I really like the HVX, but be sure to get the "a" model. Better with low light settings. I love that camera.

I say go HD! DV will be a thing of the past. Buying a DV camera is like buying computers... It will be obsolete in two years.
