on a dgital camera, what exactly is the DV output, and how do I use it (what cables/pc cards/ports do i need)?

I want to start shooting on my crappy handycam, and want to get familiar with the technology first. Also for editing is Avid free (i saw someone mention it in another forum) alright? (its gotta be better than movie maker at least)

DV means Digital Video. Typically "firewire" is the way to go. Your camera may not have a firewire if it's a crappy as you say.

Do you have a firewire (also known as IEEE-1394, i.link and Lynx) output on your camrea and computer?

thanks.
yeah, figured what it meant, thought it was like a standarised format, since its next to the s video and A/V outs on the camera. It says DV in/Out, and theres this i symbol next to it. found an image on google:
thats exactly what it looks like, expect this doesnt have that i symbol, must be a sony thing, does that stand for i.link? the site also says a firewire cable connects to it so i guess i'll have to get one of those and a firewire card for my pc.

Will that output of the camera provide better quality than the usb out?

Yep - that's your firewire connection. I'm a Mac user so the PC folks will have to help you with cards and such.

Quailty is about the same between USB and Firewire - but Firewire is faster.
