digital camera for beginner...

I am at the point now that so many of you are probably at where you have realized for a long while that if you wanna manifest your vision you gotta do it yourself.

I need a professional camera, a mini dv one is what I had in mind. I don't want one with preferential treatment of outdoor over indoor shooting or vice versa. I would be looking to spend about $700-900. One thing i want to work with for certain shots is focal points, where you use a lense to change the focus from the foreground to the background etc.

Anyone have any recommendations?
