I have never used a crane / jib before, I wish someone would explain to this total newbie how they work with the camera, and camera person (me). I am having a hard time understanding how the cameraman focuses the camera, sees what is going on through the camera, when the camera is 12 feet away from me. I am looking for a cheap way to do crane shots.
The camera man looks at a monitor that is at the bottom of the crane and dose his work that way. Building your own is the "cheap" way to go but this takes a bit of time and very very very carefull planing. Search on google and you can find some very good blueprints.

This site should have plenty of instructions on making a jib, along with stabilizers and anything else you may wish to make yourself:

So could I rig a cheap portable DVD player and a long video cable or something from the camera on the end of the crane to near the tripod? Do I have to, or should I buy an expensive TFT HD monitor to use with the crane?

You dont need a good quality monitor for that, as long as you can see were the camera is pointing to. I would go for the cheapest way too, its just that thing were you dont need a 50" HD plasma screen.
Have fun building that thing, your gonna get some really awsome shots with that.
