Hey guys. Do you reckon I could make this work as a film:
A film about a man who has totally lost the will to live. He lives alone in his apartment, and has virtually lost all contact with the outside world. On the day of his twentieth birthday, he plans to kill himself, at exactly one o'clock, unless he recieves a phone call from someone wishing him a happy birthday before then. The film would begin at 9 o'clock and show the man in what will (possibly) be his last few hours on Earth.
The entire film would take place in the one location (his apartment), with few actors, and would for the most part be narrated (the inner dialogue of a very troubled man).
Any feedback/ suggestions on this idea?

Since a this is such a visual medium I would think the inner dialogue of a very troubled man wouldn't make a very interesting movie.

Right now I can't think of a single movie that was entirely about the inner dialogue of anyone - movies are usually about what happens to someone; the exterior struggles.

And suicide stories are pretty much the domain of teens and twentysomething filmmakers. God knows I did my suicide film and at every student festival I've ever seen at least 20% of its entries are about suicide.

Could it work? Only you know that. Is this a story you're passionate about? If so, if no one can keep you from telling this story no matter what, then you just might be able to make it work.

Which would make my film original, right?
I did think about the fact that a lot of suicide films are made by student film makers, but that isn't really something I'm really worried about.
Thanks for the feedback, Certified instigator, I appreciate it. If anyone else would like to share their thoughts, please do.

This would be very tricky to pull off, since it seems all the focus will be on this guy, and right now he doesn't sound like that compelling a character. Are you planning to use flashbacks at all to show his life outside the apartment before he retreated into himself?

What kind of actors are you going to have if the film takes place in his apartment? You said the character has lost all contact with the outside world.

"few" actors instead of one made me think either flashbacks, or at the end ALL of his friends/family show up.

If you don't use flashbacks, you'll have tomake this guy's shut-in life extremely entertaining. Perhaps some hilariously witty views on both his life and the world outside as he remembers it. While the onset is a depressing scenario, the only way people would sit and keep watching is if it grips them.

There has to be a balance between "I'm doomed, woe is me" and redeeming qualities. Not so down that viewers are thinking "Just die already!", and not so cool that viewers think "how can this guy be suicidal?".

I hope this helps.

I wasn't originally going to have flash backs but the more I think about the more I think it would be a good idea. I think I'll chuck some in.
As for the other characters, I had a few scenes planned with a pizza boy who comes to his apartment, his landlord, and a woman on a phone 'hot line'. Oh, and a goldfish.

every idea could be a very good movie, just think about the vision of what you want to put on screen, i mean, do you want the audience to see all the posible thoughts of that character on that last hours, or you want to give some fallen chances for somebody to wish him happy birthday... i recommend you to define what you want people to SEE and FEEL (audience i mean), this is a very good idea for a tragedy o comedy, you decide, first define the genre and after that you could tell if YOU can make it a good idea for a film or if someboy else could.

hope this help

good luck!
