For some short films, if I use copyrighted music such as some songs from the movie man on fire in our short films, submit it into a film festival with that copyrighted music. If we submit it to a festival to in turn if we won something it would only be awards no money whatsoever...would we be able to use copyrighted songs without any trouble?

Ive seen some videos on youtube that won some awards in film festivals using copyrighted music, and they didn't credit the song anywhere within the film. So if in the end we win anything at all, it would be awards only and no money, would it be fine to use copyrighted music?

The right to copy (copyright) has nothing to do with compensation or winning anything. The owner of the copyright has the right to limit how people use (copy) their work.

You are correct - people use copyrighted music all the time. It's still technically illegal.

The answer to both your questions is no: you cannot use a copyrighted song even if you get no money whatsoever. You cannot use a copyrighted song even if you give credit. You need permission to use songs that are owned by someone else.
