I need to know if I can video like Garageband and put it in a For Profit movie. The shot is a cutaway to show a music producer is actively recording a subject in his studio. The audience needs to see the computer screen ON and RECORDING. I can get a Stock Footage Clip if necessary but would like to know if I can simply video the Garageband or other platform (can go with an open source one, of course) without any ? issues?

Thanks in advance.

It's unlikely that you would run into problems with the software vendor by including a quick shot of a screen showing their software being used as intended.

However, if you plan to do any commercial distribution, a distributor may insist of having this cleared as part of the chain of title for the film.

Your best bet would be to seek permission from the software developer, just in case. Which might mean it is better to use an open source product, as you are more likely to get an answer from them than you are from Apple.

It's also important to note that just because something is open source, doesn't mean it is free of copyright. Open source is a type of license, which is not the same as public domain (which is truly free).
