Hey guys I just joined the site and didn't see any kind of introduction thread so I figured i would post the details about myself first and then go into the questions that I have.

Name: James W. Davis
Age: 29 years young
Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Found the site: hehe google search about 20 minutes before I joined
Interests: Video Games, Comics, Anime, Cars, Japan, Canada, Europe, Writing for Films and Books, Pyrotechnics, Special Effects, Computers, Electronics, well I'll just say lots and leave it at that. ?:D?

Now onto my questions, I have skimmed the FAQs for the subjects and if not found then I included the questions, or if I didn't understand an answer from the FAQ then I'll note that also. And both the Visual Effects Society and the Exposure.co.uk sites are both not working for me (3:46AM EST).

ok I am planing to join a few of my local pyro groups and hopefully be able to learn from them how to do these but i'm not sure what they would be properly called. I'm not sure if they would be considered squibs or flashpots? in this video around 40 seconds you will see Kamen Rider Decade fighting some creatures and when he attacks with his sword you see a shower of sparks from the area where he striked the enemies. Anyone here know someone that does this stuff or any good sites for information?

ok the FAQs knocked out about 20 or so of my questions, great job on the FAQ writing guys.

These things are often times done as visual effects (in AfterEffects, for example), rather than special effects (i.e. during the shoot).

You will need a license to do any pyroworks, and that involves getting some training before you're allowed to play with fire. You may also want to avoid giving your real name out on the internet.

That said, welcome, and how's Michigan these days? I'm curious to hear your perspective.

Welcome!

A squib is a small explosive device used for triggering a larger
explosion, or (by itself) it's own explosion. They range in size
from a millimeter (to shatter a bottle, for example) to 15 or so
millimeters (for a blood bag) and are ignited by an electric
current. Since a squib is an explosive device you need a license
to purchase, transport and use them.

A shower of sparks is a very specific pyrotechnic device called a
gerb.

You're planing to join a few of you local pyro groups. I assume
a pyro group will have licensed people who can help.

Yeah I knew that I would need to be licensed to do any of that stuff, which is why i have not even attempted to make anything yet.

How is Michigan? LOL well the employment sucks here, too many people on the road that can't drive or talking on cell phones (well that still counts as can't drive). The area I live in is quiet but some areas are not so much nice and quiet.

Yeah here in Michigan we have a Pyro group called The Michigan Pyrotechnics Arts Guild and I'm going to a demonstration on December 12, 2009 and while there I plan to get all the information that I can while there.

According to the NYT, Michigan is trying to attract film work.

The state, like all others, is trying to use tax incentives in that regard.

You may want to look into this, because, even if you don't get a job, you may get contacts and feedback. Good luck, and tell us how it goes. 🙂

The MPAG looks like a fireworks group. Very different than
pyrotechnics for the movies. A different license is required. For
example someone with a commercial or theatrical license cannot,
legally, use any pyro devises on a movie set.

But Im sure they will tell you this. And they will probably have
contacts with a licensed pyro tech in the area.
