I was just studying with a few friends and instead of studying we began to debate about what makes a movie a classic. Is it box-office sales? Staying power? Or simply because it holds a dear place in the hearts of people?
I know this really isn't a technical question, but I was wondering what you all felt about the topic.
What is good in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women!

Different people have different definitions of Classic. Mostly it's a marketing ploy.

I think a Classic, in my humble opinion, is a film that has staying power across multiple generations and time frames. For example, Casablanca is just as watchable and relevant today as it was when it came out. It is a piece of cinema that addresses universal themes that anybody can relate to. Just like in literature, certain films are simply crafted at such a high level and speak to a certain element of human nature that they are just, well, classic...
One major thing that makes a movie a classic is that it passes the test of time.
