Hey,
here is a test that I did with the canon hv 40 in case someone is thinking about getting it.
I hope you enjoy,
The 'test' doesn't help much. YouTube butchers the video quality to begin with, discarding most of the information that could show the difference between a cheap, consumer $600 camcorder and a $10k pro. Also, most consumer camcorders do quite well outdoors anyway. Their shortcomings begin to show in fast motion and low light, and we don't get to see much of either.
HV40 is a good consumer camcorder. Due to the ability to shoot 24p (wrapped in 60i, though), it has been rather popular with amateur and independent filmmakers. However, in the increasingly tapeless world, it uses HDV (MiniDV tapes), and captures at 1440x1080 (rather than full-raster 1920x1080).
Most importantly, it is a cheap, plastic, consumer device. You can start learning the craft of filmmaking by shooting with it, if you already have one. I'm not sure whether it is worth buying such a consumer camcorder for the pursuit of filmmaking, though. Very soon, its limitations will present obstacles, which will be frustrating to overcome. Panasonic's HMC-40, for example, would likely give longer learning time before outgrowing it.
