Personally I'd like to see an Equipment topic on these boards to house the which camera is best, which microphone is best questions.

This thread would be a great place for the "Equipment Topic" that you suggest rjschwarz.

What camera and mic do you suggest?

Cameras and mic needs depend upon the film. There is no simple answer, that's why it would be good to lump them together. A questionaire could say they want to go on film or DV and their cost range and the answers spring from there.

Personally i'm going to get a Canon XL1. It uses 3CCDs so the picture quality is great but still uses cheap MiniDV instead of filmstock. . It costs roughly $1,200-$1,500 or so on Ebay now that the XL2 is out. Has all the attachments to allow for numberous other lenses. Can film in 40 full frame mode to simplify transfers to film and get away from the digital video look. It has firewire to make it easy to dump into my computer. It's professional enough to convince the actors it's serious and small and portible enough for guerrilla action with quick setups and such. Sony and Panosonic make comparible cameras and different people have different experience with each but the fact that the XL1 was used on 28 Days Later providing me with an hour and a half series of test shots of potential quality is the final straw that won me over. Of course if the DP I'm trying to get ahold of has a camera we'll use that and spend the money on something else.

Microphones? I haven't narrowed one down yet. Probably the Azden SGM-2x set up as a boom mic. It has a reasonable street price with good sound. I'd prefer to get a DAT tape to record the sound but the prices are scaring me and I have to keep doing research. Perhaps whomever I eventually tap as a sound guy will have a solution and save me some money (Film School students often have access to equipment after all, I'm not counting on their film equipment because I don't want to pay for film developing and dailies but good sound is good sound. If they have it I'll use it.

I'm not sure if this can be done, but I'd also like to see each poster have a city and country included by there name instead of just the country. The USA is a pretty big place and it would be nice to know if anyone is in my corner or not.
