This march I begin shooting on a new film. However I don't think my Sony handycam is the right camera for it. I have a budget of up to 1500 dollars to upgrade. What should I shoot for that can also take a shotgun mic.

Any camera with an audio in connector can use a shotgun mic.

My favorite of the small, cheaper cameras is the JVC GR-X5. I'm not a fan of small cameras, but this one is good.
Sony makes the DCR-PC100 but the CCD?s are smaller than the JVC.
So far Panasonic is the leader in 3 CCD market with the GS 150, GS250, DV953 and the GS400. Only the PV-GS400 has decent sized chips. I like both the GS250 and the DV953. Check out the new PV-GS180 - it?s only $600.
