Hi guys,

Since I'm posting under 'Newbie Questions', I'm obviously a newbie.

I've shot only 2 short films so far and they're pretty bad as you would expect. Anyhow, I'm considering buying a video camera ( I borrowed the ones before).

Since my budget is not that much, I can't afford prosumer level cameras. So I thought of getting a HD camera and buy a DOF adapter to use it with.

Which combination is better?

1. DOF adapter + Canon hv20 (tape, 1 CMOS)
2. DOF adapter + any good HDD camera - Sony SR12, Canon HG10,etc (heard that quality is not too good because of the compression?)
3. DOF adapter + 3CCD cameras

Would this (DOF adapter + budget camera) be anywhere near a prosumer camera(without a DOF adapter) like Panasonic DVX100, Canon XL2, etc?

I would upgrade to a better camera in the future though, i hope. But for the time being is this more than good enough? Please help smart people of this forum! Thanks.

I doubt the reason your 2 short films were pretty bad had anything to do with the lens
or the camera. Standard newbie mistakes are poor audio (using the on camera mic),
lack of good lighting and, well, just being new. I'l bet the first couple of times you went
out on a football field you weren't very good - and the ball you used had little to do with
that.

Just to be clear - I really dislike those DOF adaptors. I've used them and they make
shooting miserable (for me) and don't really add much to the final product. Excellent
lighting can make video shot with almost any camera MUCH better.

That said, I like the HV20 even though the lens isn't very good. My favorite consumer
camera is the JVC GZ-HD7 - it has an excellent Fujinon lens. I'm actually getting used
to the HDD cameras and find the compression isn't that much of an issue.

I gues, if pressed, I'd pick option 1.

You're exactly right! Those shorts weren't good because of the lack of experience, but it was good for learning.

About the DOF adapters..."really dislike"? hmm. Oh no! I was kinda counting on them. I saw a coupe of footage from those adapters and they look awesome, to me at least. What kind of problems did you find working with that kind of rigs (DOF adapters)?

I like the hv20 because of the price and 24p. I tried it out before but its build wasn't as good compared to other newer cams (feels cheap), for me at least. I'm kinda leaning on HDD cams at the moment rather than miniDV.

the idea here is actually using 'option 1' for the time being before upgrading. I'm just wondering if getting option 1 is worth it?

So, JVC GZ-HD7/cameras of this quality only (without adapter) or 'option 1'?
