do you think 720p HD recorded at 24p would look like 16 or 35mm film when done in B&W? does anyone know of any online examples?

Well, it's still 720p regardless of color or black and white: that's probably going to be somewhere between super-8 and 16mm in resolution, with a lower contrast range.
