I'm trying to round up some sound equipment. I'm filming with a Canon XH-A1 and I am wondering what boom mic to get. what other things will i need, if i buy a mic that mounts to the camera can i use that on a boom?
Yes. Any mic that you can put on your camera can
be put on a boom pole.
Just to be clear - and you probable already know
this - but there is no such mic as a "boom mic". A
boom mic is a microphone used on a boom pole.
A minor semantic issue, I'm sure. But I just wanted
to clarify. And that's not to say all mic are created
equal. A shotgun mic (a generic term that means
any long barreled mic) with a lobar pick up pattern
is different than a condensor mic with a cardioid
pick up pattern.

Do you know of a place where I can purchase these items in a package, or will I have to search for them seperately? I know I need a mic and a boom pole, is there anything else I should look at? Id like to keep the entire price under 400 if possible.

Long cables.... ideally you'll have a pole with internal wiring so that you'd attach a cable to the end of the pole where the other end runs to the mixer which then connects to a separate sound recording device.
If you absolutely have to, you can run the mic directly into the camera to record on that tape, however know that the more cables you attach to the camera, the more your hamper camera movement and slow down setups (which then restricts your ability to get all the shots you need).

You won't find a more reliable place than B&H Photo/Video. They
might have a package deal. But both items for under $400 will get
you poor equipment. It can be done, but (as always) you get what
you pay for. Most people spend a lot on a camera and then have
little left over for audio. A good mic will outlast a camera by
decades. I'm still using a shotgun mic I bought in 1986. I think I
paid $450 for it. And I was earning $5/hr. So that's about $19 per
year. I'd find it hard to even find tape for the top of the line
Hi-8 camera ($5,000) I was using then.
But that's not what you asked. Sorry about editorializing. B&H
will have price ranges you can click on to narrow down your
search.
