I just finished a silent film that has a definte film noir feel to it and was wondering if I should add noise. I think it would give it a nice sort of quirky feeling, but I'm worried it may distract from the shots on screen. Any ideas?

Add the noise, show it to people (not your friends) and ask what they thought of the movie. 50% of a movie watching experience is audio. I suspect if your visuals are good, sound won't distract, but enhance.

Well, to tell you the truth, the reason I took the sound out was obecause of a few sections of extremly painful dialogue where my actors decided to improv instead of following the script. But taking out only these audio clips doesn't work because they are key clips if i use the sound. And I can't reshoot, my actors are now gone. I thought maybe I could pass it off as artsy, which if you take the sound out it is, but i really liked the story.

You could always do subtitles, or you could redub the actors (or one) with a new voice for the entire movie. The lips won't sync in the section in question but it might be worth a try.

Thanks guys. Its subtitled right now, and I think I'll just leave it the way it is.
