Ok I may not be extremely serious about getting into the movie business but I do want to make short movies and so on for now. I have access to a vhs-c camera but using it I've come to realise that its really bad quality. Now I do have adobe premiere and after effects and other editing programs. The questions is which camera is the best for the 1000$ cdn price range. Preferably digital I would like a 3CCD camera with manual options, but I think there is no such camera for such a low price. So i was wondering what camera would be the best for this price considering that what i'm looking for is good video and audio quality?

Well, for a 1000$ which was exactly my budget too, i got me a Sony Dcr-TRV25,and a mic. which isnt a 3 ccd cam. but it also didnt cost 5000 bucks ethier and it gets the job done, to tell you the truth. I have shot shorts, and had access to magic bullet(adobe after effects plug in) and after editing the finish product looked closed to that quality of 16 mm film.....

so with the patientance and good editing u can prob take bout ne decent digi cam and make it look good, its all about resources..... if your on a budget..

best,
derek

Well i've taken a look at each camera's specs and i've come to the conclusion that the sony is slightly better than the JVC with 200$ more left in ure pocket so in my oppinion if your shure that these 2 camras are the ones u want i say go with the sony but u might want to get another oppinion.

Well from what i can see they both seem to be around the best you can buy for features and quality of video/audio that only have 1CCD for that price range... but these cameras are more oriented towards home movies than making films... now i'm shure if you're willing to dish out 2000$ you can find a 3CCD camera for around that same amount... but as of right now i can't think of any.

Are there any around $1700 you would reccommend for making films? Why would the cameras i showed you not be good for making films (if i use editing software etc.)? mrx347?bellatlantic.net -dean

For $1700, check out the Canon GL-1. You can find some good prices on ebay. But really check the sellers background if you go that route. Go to BH Photo and check out some of their mini-dv cams like the Sony DCR TRV 950($1,999.00), the panasonic AG EZ50($1,199.95), or the panasonic AG-DVC15 ($2,199.95). These are some of the cheapest 3 chip cameras.

I've found GL-1's on ebay for as low as $1100 by the way.

Read the article below and search around for more info about CCDs. A 3-Chip camera will simply give you a better picture than a one chip. It's not necessary to have if you are starting out and just want a camera to mess around with, but if you're going for serious, broadcast quality images then you will want 3 CCDs. But if you have the money, might as well get the best bang for the buck.

There are so many cameras out there with usually minor differences and feels. You just need to spend some time and research the cameras; find clips of footage shot with different cameras if you can. Also look into film as a possibilty. Whatever you choose, remember you'll need other things such as proper lighting and audio equipment, post software and hardware, and a good story.
