I'm a terrible writer, but with great concepts. I can visually interpret a script with great flair, but can't write a good one for the life of me. How important is it to pursue writing before directing? I only know of one successful director that has never been credited as a screenwriter: Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later). What is the best way to obtain scripts to direct?

Well, if you really want to get noticed, you will have to make scripts yourself, or hire someone to potray your ideas (the first one is more cheaper). Writing I think would help any director alot, who knows, maybe you will like it more then directing! I also am in the same position, I can get good ideas, but sometimes can't put it into script, to me it seems too formal for thoughts and ideas. It gets the job done though. You can always post for scripts in the wanted section, if you don't want to use any of your ideas ?:D?

If your a terrible write, then I would guess your a terrible reader. Which, in-turn, would make you a terrible director. So in this way, I believe it is equally important to know how to write. Methinks writing and Directing go hand-in-hand, like all the other roles in making a movie.

Make films that turn your insides out. Make films that turn your insides out. Make films that turn your insides out. Make films that turn your insides out. Make films that turn your insides out.

Writing, directing and editing are all basically the same job with different tools: so if you're good at one you should be at least OK with the others. However, if you're good at ideas but not as good at making them work on paper, you could always hook up with a writer who's good at making ideas work on paper but not so good at coming up with them in the first place... there are an awful lot of writers out there who are good at what they do, and would like to see some of their work on screen even if it means writing scripts for other people for free.

i think you should be a decent photographer/story-teller in order to be a good director.
