Hello,

I am a novice to film making. I want to make a short humorous cross country film with very very low budget or rather no budget!

Any pointers to the basics of film making would be highly appreciated.
Can I use a handycam, software for editing, and a computer to make a commercial film ? Also, I have access to the audio labs at my school where I plan to do my audio editing.

Could you please let me know the list of audio and video equipment along with the software that can help to make a commercial film ?

Thanks
FILMLOVER

Well, to be frank, most low-budget movies, particularly first low-budget movies, are not commercially viable. Though that's not to say that with a good script and a good eye for shots you can't shoot a movie with a decent DV camera, edit it on a PC or Mac and sell it to TV to get your money back.

Hey filmlover. I?d be glad to give you a list. But I have a few questions so I can offer a list that would be of help.

When you say ?commercial? what exactly do you mean? In the theaters with a wide release by a company like Lion?s Gate or Artisan?

Also, there really isn?t a market for shorts. You need to know your market. When was the last time you say a short? When was the last time you paid money to rent a short? When was the last time you purchased a short? How many of your friends buy short films?

There are markets for shorts, but they're limited: I've met people who've made their money back getting small amounts from showings on a number of TV stations around the world, for example.

Generally, though, I agree, shorts are normally made for experience, not to make money.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I meant a 1.5 hour movie. Its a comdey film. Plan to release for the Indian Community in the US and target the local markets in India. Of ocurse, it would be in English and a mix of other local language. Would be interested to market across US for the local markets too. I would say something like a NRI movie like Hyderabad Blues.

Help or information would be appreciated.

Thanks much !
