I have a JVC GR-DV3000U MiniDV camcorder that I am going to make a short with, however the sound quality of the internal mic is horrible. The only external mic option for recording sound through the camera is with the JVC Zoom Mic that attaches to the camera's Info-Shoe. The JVC Zoom Mic costs $150 and I have read poor reviews of it's quality so I am looking for an inexpensive alternate means of recording sound. I was thinking of using a digital recorder and syncing it to the video in editing.

My questions are, can the original audio (audio recorded with the camera) be removed in editing and replaced with the new audio? And second, would this be a good route to go for sound or is there a better option I should be considering?

I have the JVC GY DV5000. I always record my audio on DAT, transfer to CD, dump to my HD and then sync it up in Final Cut.

That way I get sound that's as good as the picture.

You can do this in Final Cut and even the free program that comes with every Mac - iMovie, so I'm sure you can do it in any decent editing program.
