Audio input question?

I am hoping to shoot a short film with the help of a freinds camera, a Canon xl1s. I have shot one before, but we got discussing some things and I'd like to hear some thoughts from others.
Many will record their audio to a nagra or some other outside tool and then sync it up....my question is, I have run a boom mic directly into the camera in the past..payed close attention to the levels and already had my audio all synced. So what's the advantage of using one method or another, especially when cost is important. I have seen these new digital recorders that are small and can be used on set, but why not just go straight to the camera with a boom pole mic?

Any thoughts please, Thanks!

Very simple. More control.

When you have a person dedicated to riding levels and monitoring sound - and nothing else - fewer mistakes slip through. When you don't have audio cables running from the boom to the camera camera movements are easier and you run less risk of picking hum from the electric cables.

It's kind of like every other aspect of making a movie. More people dedicated to one job keeps things moving faster. Three people unloading the grip truck is faster then the director doing it. A person dedicated to watching continuity - and nothing else - speeds up the process and lessens errors. A good first AD running the set speeds up the process and keeps everything on track better than the director doing it - and frees the director up to concentrate on the actors. Having a person dealing only with props lessens the errors and speeds the process.

Of course you can plug the mic directly into the camera if cost is a factor.
