YES!!

Check out www.ice.org.nz , it's the site for ICEntertainment which is primarily based in Wanganui though we have people in Hamilton and Wellington. We're doing a lot of short comedy clips at the moment (we've got a stack of stuff piled up that we've got half-done at the moment), and this year should see the filming of a zombie parody feature called "Everyone Stupid Dies".

Are you currently working on anything?

Thanks for replying. I'm not working on anything at the moment. I'd like to but haven't got the equiptment. I've only recently decided I wanted to make films. I'm still trying to find out all I can about film making. Do you know if you can edit on a laptop? I thought you couldn't but it would be great if I could.

Some people do, but it will depend on the laptop, software and video format.

Essentially, you'll need at least:

Windows XP with Movie Maker (comes standard). At this stage a more technical film editor isn't really necessary.

A decent set of system specs (if bought new in the past say 3 years it should be fine to capture in realtime).

Some way of getting your shot footage into your computer - generally a capture card (not very common on laptops) or buy a RCA>USB converter so you can hook your AV cables straight from your camcorder (or VCR, DVD player, Game system, whatever) into your computer and send the footage into Movie Maker that way.

Thanks for explaining a bit more, Morgneto, but I don't really understand what you've told me. We've only had a computer for the last couple of months and I don't know too much about it. I'll see if my friends know more about this sort of thing.

A lot of laptops have Firewire (aka IEEE1394) ports, then you can connect a DV or HDV camera direct to the computer.

Movie-maker should be OK for making cheap and cheerful movies to learn how to do it. There are other free editing programs you can download like Avid Free DV, but that's a lot more complex.

Great! Second person from New Zealand to reply. There are about 10 or 12 of us from New Zealand, so it's great to hear from more of you. What sort of film are you working on? And how long have you been making films? Sorry if I'm being nosy, I'm just really interested.

Hey, I've been making films for about 3 years.
I'm working on a dramatic short film at the moment.
(also 48 hours is coming up; if you're not already taking part i highly suggest you find yourself a team, it's a really great learning experience)

What exactly is this 48 hours thing. I'd like to take part but I don't have a camera and don't know anyone who does. Could you tell me more about it please. If you could tell me where to find out more about it that would be great. Nice hearing more from you.

48Hours is a competition held each year and Sponsored by Peter Jackson. Teams have exactly 48 hours to complete an entire short film (everything from writing to editing). The genre each team gets is only revealed at the very last minute, as well as the four criterea that EVERY film has to adhere to: a certain character, prop, aciton, dialogue, etc.

I watched the DVD of last year's "winners and then some", and while there were a few gems, it got very boring and repetitive due to the (IMO) stupid criterea. There's only so much "Bodil DuRezney, Animal Lover", Bannanas and... some crappy line of dialogue.

I am still interested in competing this year, however I will not be so interested in trying to watch any more than 15 other entries!
