Hey,
I'm curious if anybody here has used any of the many "instant film school"-type products that are out there -- computer programs or DVDs that claim to teach directing or editing techniques? I'm thinking specifically of "Hollywood Camera Work" and "Film School In A Box." Have you guys used these products? If so, have they helped you make your movies?
I haven't. But I'm more of a hands on kinda director. I learned by going out there with my friends and making movies. Making a LOT of movies. I learned that way. The idea of learning to make movies by watching a DVD just seems silly to me. I liked learning by making the mistakes myself and fiduring out why I made them.

These products and books might teach you the basics and, honestly, I do reccomend buying 1 or 2 books on filmmaking and using these as guidelines...but the best way to learn is to do it. You don't have to embark on a huge project your first time around...make a demo tape if you like...shoot an action shot you always wanted to do...experiment with camera angles that you think would look cool...experiment with a green screen...get on Microsoft Word and try your hand at writing a short film. Start small, then work your way up. For directors and cinematographers, I definately reccomend training yourself with a Demo Reel and then you have something to present to other people.
